CAUSE-TAILORED COMEDY PRODUCTION
Grassroots Comedy produces cause-tailored comedy showcases and original comedy content designed to increase public awareness, understanding, and engagement around urgent social, humanitarian, and environmental issues. While our broader vision includes podcasts, topical open-mic incubators, and comedy engagement at social-impact conferences, our current core activities under this program are our tailored showcases and related cause-driven content.
Our showcase model begins by identifying a timely and meaningful cause-often connected to current local or national events—and intentionally designing the show and promotional strategy to elevate that issue. This includes selecting comedians whose lived experiences or perspectives connect authentically to the cause, partnering with frontline organizations, and providing audiences with clear pathways for learning, volunteering, or taking action. For example, following the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, we produced comedy showcases with DMV-based organizations supporting newly arrived Afghan refugees, featuring comedians with refugee and immigrant lived experience and providing audiences with direct ways to support, and extended this work through companion cause-focused content, including a podcast episode featuring organizational representatives and Afghan refugees sharing lived experience and practical ways audiences could help.
While only showcases and cause-tailored content are currently active under this program, Grassroots Comedy is actively exploring expansion opportunities, including relaunching our podcast and piloting additional cause-centered comedy engagement formats as capacity and funding allow. Organizations interested in partnering with Grassroots Comedy as a showcase beneficiary or collaborator can learn more through our Partnerships page.
COMEDY AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOPS
We recognize that civic engagement is most effective through direct interaction with communities most affected by the social justice issues we address through our work. While comedy is a driving vehicle for raising awareness, it also helps provide a forum to impacted communities directly. That's why we started the Stand Up Comedy Incubator for Women and Non-Binary Folx, and are launching the Comedy Catalyst Program!
We are always scoping opportunities to work directly with communities to develop comedy-for-advocacy programming that is centered at the specific needs of the community.
